What is Bronstein delay in chess?

The clock falls and then jumps back. Here is exactly how much, and why.

Bronstein delay is a chess timing method that gives you back the time you actually spent on a move, up to a fixed limit. So the short answer to what is Bronstein delay in chess: your main clock starts running the moment your opponent presses, and when you press, the clock refunds what that move cost you — but never more than the delay. Under a 5-second Bronstein delay, a 3-second move is free. An 8-second move costs you 3 seconds.

The method is named after David Bronstein, the Soviet grandmaster who tied the 1951 world championship match with Mikhail Botvinnik 12–12, five wins each and fourteen draws, with the champion keeping the title. Bronstein introduced the time-increment idea in 1973, fifteen years before Bobby Fischer filed for US patent 4,884,255 in 1988 — the digital clock that added a flat increment every move. The point of a delay clock is that a player should not lose purely because of the seconds it takes to reach out, move a piece and press, while nobody can bank extra minutes by shuffling quickly.

What is Bronstein delay in chess: the arithmetic

The rule is one line. If you spend t seconds on a move and the delay is d seconds, your clock loses t minus d, and never less than zero. Fast moves cost nothing. Slow moves cost only the excess.

Here is a five-move sequence starting from 5:00 with a 5-second Bronstein delay.

Two things follow from that table. First, your clock can never read more than the number you started with, because the refund is capped by what you spent. Second, in a scramble where both players keep moving inside the delay, the clock effectively stands still and the game becomes a race of hands rather than a race against the display.

Bronstein delay and simple delay: same time, different display

Bronstein delay and simple delay — also called US delay — produce identical remaining time at every stage of the game. They differ only in what the display does while you think.

  • Simple delay: your main clock is frozen for the first d seconds of your turn. A separate countdown ticks off the delay, and only when it hits zero does your main time start falling.
  • Bronstein: your main clock falls immediately from the first second. When you press, it jumps back up by the amount you used, capped at d.

Add up either sequence and you get the same number. The FIDE Laws of Chess set out delay mode in Article 6.3.2: both players get a main thinking time plus a fixed extra time each move, the countdown of the main thinking time only starts once the fixed extra time has expired, and provided you press before that extra time runs out, your main thinking time does not change, whatever proportion of it you used. The wording describes the simple-delay display. A Bronstein clock reaches the same remaining time by a different route, which is why digital clocks offer both and events that specify delay accept either.

The practical difference is your eyes. Under simple delay the number you read is the time you are guaranteed to still have. Under Bronstein the number you read during your turn is temporarily pessimistic, because the refund has not landed yet. In a time scramble that gap matters more than the mathematics does.

Bronstein delay versus Fischer increment

Increment adds a flat amount after every move regardless of how long you took. Bronstein returns only what you spent. Under 3 minutes with a 2-second increment, a player who answers instantly for twenty moves gains 40 seconds and can finish with more time than they started with. Under 3 minutes with a 2-second Bronstein delay, the same twenty instant moves cost nothing but gain nothing either: the clock still reads 3:00.

The two are closer than they look on the worst case. A player's total available time over n moves is the base plus d or the increment multiplied by n, either way. Over 40 moves, 3 minutes plus a 2-second delay and 3 minutes plus a 2-second increment both cap a player at 180 + 80 = 260 seconds, so each format tops out at roughly 8 minutes 40 seconds for the pair. What differs is the distribution: delay guarantees a workable minimum per move but never lets you build a cushion, so a long technical ending stays tense to the last move, while increment lets a disciplined player rebuild time and convert slowly. Who prefers Bronstein mode, and why

Preference splits almost entirely on the display, not the rules.

  • Players who like Bronstein want one number on the board. There is no second countdown to interpret, and the figure on the clock is always the honest worst case for the current move.
  • Players who dislike it object to the rebound. Watching your clock drop to 0:04 and then jump back to 0:09 is unsettling when you are trying to judge whether you have time for one more calculation, and mid-fall the number understates what you will actually have once you press.
  • Players who prefer simple delay like that the main figure never lies. Whatever it reads, that time is yours, and the delay countdown is a separate signal telling you when the free window ends.

Neither camp is playing a different time control. Simple delay is the form most often used in the United States; Bronstein delay is the form more common elsewhere. If your event specifies delay, check which display your clock uses before round one and spend two minutes getting used to it. That is the entire adjustment.
