Why is my chess clock counting up?
The usual answer to why is my chess clock counting up is a mode setting, not a fault. Digital clocks commonly ship with a count-up (stopwatch) mode among their numbered modes, and it is easy to land on by accident while cycling through the list. The rest of the time the clock is counting down correctly and the display is being misread: Bronstein delay gives time back on the press, simple delay looks frozen for a few seconds, and Fischer increment genuinely raises the total when players move faster than the bonus. Genuine hardware faults are rare and nearly always about power.

Why is my chess clock counting up: the causes, most likely first
1. The clock is in count-up or stopwatch mode
Where a clock offers an up counter, it is there so you can time how long a game took, or run a game with no time limit at all. It sits in the same numbered list as blitz, increment and delay, so a couple of extra presses while scrolling can put you there. The tell is unambiguous: both sides start at zero, or at the value you set, and climb second by second with no ceiling. Nothing you do during the game will make an up counter fall. 2. It is running a delay or Bronstein control and the display is being misread
Bronstein delay is the classic false alarm. Your main time runs down while you think, then when you press, the clock adds back the time you actually used, up to the delay amount. On the display that looks like the number jumping backwards a second or two after every move, which people report as counting up. It is the control working exactly as designed.
Simple delay, sometimes called US delay, produces a different illusion. After you press, the opponent’s main time sits still for the delay period — five seconds is common — before it starts falling. A player glancing at a frozen display assumes the clock has stopped or reversed. If you want to see both behaviours side by side without touching your hardware, run a few moves on the delay clock and watch what each one does to the digits.
3. Fischer increment is larger than the time being used
Under increment the bonus is added on every press regardless of how long you thought. In a 3+2 game, a player who answers in one second nets one extra second that move. Over a fast sequence of ten moves, both clocks visibly rise. That is not a malfunction, it is the defining property of the control — increment is designed to stop players losing on time in won positions. Quick separation test. Press your side and hold still for twenty seconds. If the running clock rises, it is an up counter. If it falls after a short pause, it is delay. If it falls the whole time and only jumps up on the press, it is increment or Bronstein.
4. The clock is set for a game that is not chess
Several models double as general board-game timers, with modes for Go byo-yomi, Scrabble, and simple per-move timing. Byo-yomi in particular gives you a fresh period allowance for each move you complete in time, which behaves nothing like a chess control and can look as though the clock is topping itself up. If your display shows extra period counters, unfamiliar symbols, or beeps on a countdown you did not ask for, you are in a non-chess mode.
5. It is still in the set or programming state
When you are editing a control, the number on screen is the value being changed, not a running clock, and pressing a button raises it. Some clocks make the two states hard to tell apart because the display looks identical. Look for a blinking digit or an indicator symbol: those usually mean edit mode. Confirm the setting and start the clock properly.
6. Real faults: power and plungers
A weakening battery is the most common genuine defect. Low voltage can produce faint digits, spontaneous resets and erratic counting well before the clock stops altogether. Replace both cells at once with fresh ones of the same type. The other physical fault is a sticking plunger or lever, so a press never registers and one side appears to run forever. Press firmly and squarely and see whether the side indicator moves.

Resetting a digital clock and reselecting the mode
The general recovery is the same on every brand. Hold the reset button until the display clears, or remove both batteries, wait about thirty seconds, reinsert them, and let the clock boot into its default state. From there, enter mode selection and step to the control you want, then set the times and confirm before starting play.
What differs is everything specific. Analog clocks cannot count up
A mechanical clock has no modes. Its hands only ever move forward toward 12, where the flag falls, so a mechanical clock that appears to count up has simply been set with the hands in the wrong place. For a 30-minute game you set both faces to 11:30, so each hand has half an hour of travel before it reaches 12. An hour each means 11:00, and 90 minutes means 10:30.
Set the hands to 12:30 by mistake and the clock now has nearly twelve hours to run, which reads as a game that never approaches its limit. Check both faces before the first move, and confirm the flag on each side actually lifts as the minute hand nears the top.
